Seven several weeks ago I quit my job to become full-time freelance author.
Just before departing my job, I labored within the food niche for 5 years being an event planner for just one of Toronto’s private caterers, band. I spent my business days planning occasions, and that i organized from wedding ceremonies and company functions to fundraising as well as in-home cocktail parties. I loved my job, but after 2 yrs I made the decision it may be fun to create about food and share a number of things i had learned from working in the industry. I'd absolutely no clue how to pull off carrying this out, and so i registered for any food writing class at George Brown College.
Within the class, it had been recommended in my experience which i begin a blog. I hadn’t really considered it before, however the idea was that it might be a location to talk about articles, and hone my writing abilities, while concurrently accumulating a portfolio for potential editors. I accepted the concept, and released Family Bites in The month of january 2010.
I many userful stuff here in the teacher of this class, an old restaurant rater for Toronto Existence magazine, and when going for a course is within your time and effort and financial budget, I recommend it. The teacher nicely informed us that although wanting to become a food author was great, without any you make a full time income simply by doing that, unless of course there is a desk job employed by the sunday paper or newspaper. Since I understand lots of other food authors, I do think chiefly true, but you shouldn't allow that to discourage you.
Things I made the decision to complete was take my other skill – party planning – and find out basically could in some way turn that right into a writing career too. It switched to be an excellent decision. While food writing comprises 1 / 2 of my work and earnings, the relaxation originates from writing party-related content. A lot of it is all about parties and food, and a lot of it is all about parties and youngsters – I’m the mother of two boys – however the two subjects work nicely together, and also have provide me with increased writing possibilities.
All this would be to state that, if you're able to learn how to talk about food then one else together (i.e., food and travel) you will find apt to be a lot more writing projects open to you.
